Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of Salasilah (the "Service"), a genealogy platform for building and sharing family trees, operated by Global Success Partners Sdn Bhd ("we", "us", "our") at salasilah.ilpam.my.

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data and forms part of these Terms. Where these Terms and the Privacy Policy conflict on a matter of personal data, the Privacy Policy prevails.

1. The Service and its current stage

Salasilah lets you record family lineage, share it, and calculate faraid (Islamic inheritance) shares. The Service is provided free of charge. We do not currently charge fees, and these Terms do not create any payment obligation. If we introduce paid features, we will give notice and you may decline them.

The Service is still in active development and has not reached a 1.0 release. Features may change, be withdrawn, or behave unexpectedly. We provide no service-level guarantee, no guaranteed uptime, and no guarantee that data will be free of defects. Keep your own backups — the Service provides a full export (see section 8).

2. Eligibility and your account

• You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. If you are between 13 and 17, you may use the Service only with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian who accepts these Terms on your behalf.
• Accounts are created by signing in with Google. You are responsible for the security of the Google account you use, and for all activity under your Salasilah account.
• Access is currently invitation-based. An invitation is personal to you. Do not publish an invite link where anyone can take it, and do not use an invite obtained by circumventing our controls.
• Accounts are for a single person. Do not share credentials or impersonate another person.
• We may apply reasonable limits (for example, on the number of trees per account, file upload sizes, or invitation use) and may adjust them.

3. Your content, and your ownership of it

Everything you enter — names, dates, relationships, photographs, tags, notes and biographies ("Your Content") — remains yours. We claim no ownership of it.

You grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, transmit and display Your Content, strictly to the extent needed to operate the Service for you: rendering your tree, producing the shares and exports you request, computing faraid, and keeping backups. This licence exists only so we can run the Service, ends when you delete the content or your account (subject to the retention periods in the Privacy Policy), and gives us no right to publish, sell, license, or use Your Content for advertising, or to train machine-learning models.

4. Information about other people

A family tree is, by its nature, mostly personal data about people other than you. This section is the most important obligation in these Terms.

As explained in section 4 of the Privacy Policy, you are the data controller of the content you add, and we act as your processor. Accordingly, you represent and warrant that:

• You have a lawful basis to record and share information about each living person you add, and you will obtain their consent where the law requires it.
• You will not upload a photograph of a living person without that person's permission (or that of their parent or guardian).
• You will honour a request from any person in your tree to correct or remove their information, and you will action it yourself, promptly, using the editing tools provided.
• You will not add information about a person for the purpose of harassing, defaming, exposing, or endangering them.

Family trees can reveal sensitive personal data, including religious belief and family relationships. Handle it accordingly. If you use the Service purely for your own household and family purposes, Malaysia's PDPA household exemption may apply to you; if you use it in any organisational, commercial, or research capacity, it does not, and you take on the full obligations of a data controller.

We may remove content, or suspend an account, where we receive a credible complaint that content infringes a person's rights or these Terms.

6. Sharing, and what sharing means

You may create a link that lets other people view a tree. Every share link is protected by a passcode, Google sign-in, or both — you choose per link — so the Service does not create open, anonymous links. You may additionally restrict a share to named email addresses, set it to expire, and scope it to part of the tree. Understand what this does:

• Anyone who has the link and can satisfy its protection — the passcode, a permitted Google sign-in, or both — can open the shared view, unless you have restricted it to named email addresses. Links and passcodes can be forwarded. Revoke a share once it should no longer work.
• Shared views are redacted: every person's name is reduced to a single given name, a living person's birth date shows the year only, and private salutations, notes and biographies are never included. This redaction is a safeguard we apply by default, not a guarantee of anonymity — a recipient who already knows your family may still identify people.
• A recipient may copy (fork) a shared tree into their own account. The copy is then theirs: they become its controller, you cannot edit or delete it, and revoking your share link does not remove it. Share only with people you trust to hold a copy.
• You are responsible for deciding what to share and with whom, and for revoking a link that should no longer work.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose, or in breach of the PDPA or any other applicable law.
• Upload malicious code, or content that is defamatory, obscene, hateful, or infringes any third party's rights.
• Attempt to access another user's account, tree, or data; probe, scan, or test the security of the Service; or bypass any access control, passcode, invitation gate, or usage limit.
• Scrape, harvest, or bulk-extract data from the Service, including from shared views, whether by automated means or otherwise.
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source of the Service, except to the extent that restriction is prohibited by law.
• Impose an unreasonable load on our infrastructure, or interfere with any other user's use of the Service.
• Resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit the Service without our written permission.

8. Your data, backups, and portability

• You can export a full backup of any tree at any time, as a Salasilah JSON file (which you may protect with your own password) or as a standard GEDCOM file. We recommend you do this regularly.
• If you set a password on an encrypted export, we cannot recover it. A lost password means a permanently unreadable file.
• We keep our own backups for operational resilience. They are not a service we provide to you, and we do not guarantee that data can be restored from them on request.
• Deleting a tree deletes the people, relationships and photographs within it. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

9. Intellectual property

The Service itself — its software, design, and the names Salasilah and ILPAM together with associated logos — belongs to us or our licensors. These Terms grant you a personal, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the Service, and nothing more. You may not use our names or marks without written permission.

Third-party material made available within the Service (including Quranic text, typefaces, and reference material such as Rujukan MAIS) remains the property of its respective owners and is provided under its own terms.

10. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Service and request deletion of your account at any time by contacting us.

We may suspend or terminate your access, with notice where practicable, if you breach these Terms, if your use puts other users or the Service at risk, or if we are required to do so by law. We may also discontinue the Service as a whole, in which case we will give reasonable notice so that you can export your data.

Sections 3 (as to content already shared or forked), 5, 9, 11, 12 and 14 survive termination.

11. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, that defects will be corrected, or that any genealogical or faraid output is accurate, complete, or fit for any legal, religious, or financial purpose. Genealogical records are inherently uncertain and depend entirely on what you enter.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any right you have under Malaysian law that cannot lawfully be excluded, including under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 where it applies to you.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary loss; nor for any loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, or loss or corruption of data; nor for any loss arising from your reliance on a faraid calculation, from a share link you created, from a fork made by a recipient, or from your failure to keep an export.

Because the Service is provided free of charge, our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to one hundred Malaysian Ringgit (RM100).

13. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against any claim, demand, loss, or reasonable legal cost arising from content you added to the Service, from your breach of these Terms, or from your breach of another person's rights — including a claim by a person appearing in a tree you created or shared.

14. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia. You and we submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Malaysia. Nothing here affects the jurisdiction of the Syariah Courts over matters within their competence.

Before commencing proceedings, please contact us so we can try to resolve the matter directly.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service develops. We will change the "Last updated" date above and, where the change is material, give notice within the Service. Continued use after a change takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Service and export your data.
